Being abroad and having to communicate in English can be tricky but it is doable no matter your level nor the person you are speaking to. 😌 It is just important to keep a few things in mind when trying to have a conversation with someone in English when it is not their mother tongue either!
Here are some tips:
Speak slowly and clearly. The goal is to be understood 🗣️
Have a good translation app at hand for when necessary! 📲
Don't use complex sentence structures, idioms or phrasal verbs. Keep it simple 🙌🏻
Do not jump straight into English. Say hello in their native language first 🌎
Learn a few phrases in the native language of the country you are visiting. This effort will go a long way and make the people around you more comfortable and willing to speak in English with you 😊
