English phrases in London

Hey there!

We recently wrapped up an immersive English learning course in the vibrant city of London - my hometown. As part of the experience, we challenged our participants on the first day to find interesting English phrases and scenes in the city.

Here is a glimpse of what we discovered!

To let. One of the first things that caught our attention was this sign. To let means to rent in this context. The sign indicates that the shop space is available for rent.

Tap in. Right before getting on an Uber Boat we came across this sign.   Tap in refers to tapping your Oyster/credit card on the reader to pay for your ride. An Oyster card is the payment method for public transport in London.

Run a tab or pay as you go. We visited one of London's most famous jazz clubs, where the waiter asked us if we wanted to run a tab or pay as we go.   Run a tab means to keep a record of all your orders and pay for them at the end. Pay as you go refers to paying for each order individually as you receive it.

Red poppies. Throughout the city you can see many poles with these flowers. They represent red poppies.   In the UK, red poppies are worn as a symbol of remembrance for those who have died in wars. You might also come across people wearing red poppy pins on their clothes.
