A Very Merry Christmas in English: Festive Phrases and Traditions

Hey here!

Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays, if you prefer)! As we prepare for the big day tomorrow, let’s take a moment to explore some everyday phrases you can use this season and take a closer look at English Christmas traditions. Whether you are celebrating with loved ones, enjoying quiet time or simply observing the season in your own way, we hope this newsletter brings you a little joy.

🎄 English Christmas Traditions 🔔

Here is how Christmas typically unfolds in England:

  • Christmas Eve (24th December): This day (or evening) is usually when families prepare for the celebrations, hanging stockings and leaving out mince pies for Father Christmas (and perhaps a glass of sherry 😉).

  • Christmas Day (25th December): Every child loves the morning of Christmas Day, as it usually begins with unwrapping presents under the tree. Then, it is all about a our typical Christmas meal which could consist of: turkey, stuffing, Brussels sprouts and Christmas pudding. At 3 PM, many people gather to watch the King’s Speech, which is a lovely tradition as well.

  • Boxing Day (26th December): The day after Christmas Day has one specific purpose, in my opinion, and it is: to RELAX. Enjoy your leftover food and indulge in sporting events or shopping the post-Christmas sales.
